In April 2006 Wethersfield partnered with the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund to become a "Connecticut Clean Energy Community" and pledged to have 20% of the town's electricity come from clean energy sources by the year 2010. A Clean Energy Committee guided the town's efforts through June 2009 (meeting minutes are available online) and helped accomplish the following:
- Over 200 residents bought clean electricity for their homes and business by signing-up for CL&P's CTCleanEnergyOptions, a program that still is available;
- The Town acquired a 3kW solar photovoltaic system to be installed at the Pitkin Community Center, approximately 88% funded by the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund;
- Two "Green Summits" and other community events educated residents and gathered ideas for becoming a greener community; and
- The Town solicited bids from electricity suppliers that will include 20% clean energy sources and in the interim purchased renewable energy credits.
The Town's continued efforts to use and promote clean energy now are part of the larger work of the Citizens Energy Conservation Advisory Committee. View their web page for more information and links to additional resources, or contact:
