13th Annual Scarecrows Along Main Street

Dozens of scarecrows will once again line Main Street in the business section of Old Wethersfield. The thirteenth Annual Scarecrows Along Main Street runs from Sunday, September 27 through Sunday, October 25, 2009. This popular event draws visitors to the Historic District to see the many unusual and ingenious scarecrows built by children, families, adults, businesses and organizations.

Volunteers Needed for 375th Anniversary Parade

The 375th Anniversary Committee is looking for volunteers to help with the parade which has been rescheduled for October 4, 2009. Because of the postponement, additional volunteers may be needed. Some of the jobs include parking lot traffic managers, T-shirt booth attendants, parade assistants, Banner Carriers for Parade, refreshments for Parade coordinators & volunteers and others. Shifts would run for approximately 2-3 hours.

Language Translators Needed

The Department of Social and Youth Services is in need of volunteers willing to act as translators for some of their non-English speaking clients. The language translation services most needed at this time are Bosnian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Those who can translate other languages and can offer their services are also asked to contact the department. Client appointments generally last one half to one hour, and are in most cases are scheduled one to two weeks in advance.

Town Council Changes Meeting Time

At their June 29 meeting, the Wethersfield Town Council voted to change their meeting time from 7:30 to 7 p.m., effective with the July 20, 2009 meeting. Meetings will be held in the Town Hall Town Council Chambers.

Town Offices Return to Regular Hours

Regular hours have resumed for town offices. Regular hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Storm Debris Pickup Complete

Storm debris collection has been completed in all areas of town. There will be no additional pickups.

MDC Warns of Possible Impostor

The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) is advising all customers to be cautious of individuals posing as a "Water Company" employee in an attempt to enter homes. On July 14 the MDC was made aware of a potential impostor in West Hartford.

The MDC urges residents, especially those who are home during the day, to be alert for impostors by following these tips:

SDMS Storm Debris Drop-Off Point Closed

The temporary drop-off site for storm debris at the Silas Deane Middle School upper parking lot closed on Friday, July 10th. Residents who need to dispose of storm debris after that date may put the debris curbside for pickup per the debris collection schedule posted on the town web site and throughout the Town Hall. For additional information please contact the Physical Services Division at 721-2845.

Magazine Names Old Wethersfield "Best Old-House Neighborhood"

The editors of This Old House magazine have named Old Wethersfield as one of the nation's best old-house neighborhoods. The neighborhoods are presented in the July/August issue of the magazine, scheduled to be on newsstands June 29, and online at www.thisoldhouse.com/best-places. The magazine rated communities based upon criteria such as architectural diversity, craftsmanship of the homes, the preservation momentum in the area as well as neighborhood amenities including walkability, safety and community.
